Optical Engineering
The Optical Engineering Research Group is unique in the UK for the breadth and depth of its research in the applications of modern optics and laser technology to engineering problems. It has earned an international reputation by pioneering and developing techniques and instruments which are now used on a world wide basis. These include Laser Vibrometry, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and T.V. Holography. The group was awarded the prestigious Queen's Anniversary Prize in 2000 in recognition of its internationally leading research contributions to UK industry.
Based in the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, in 2001 the Group was awarded a Platform Grant by the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC). These Grants are intended to underpin research activity and are awarded by peer review. In order to qualify the group must be demonstrably world-leading. The Platform Grant has recently been renewed up to 2010.
