Cycling

Cycling is a great way to keep fit. It is also an effective way to reduce transport costs. Cycling is one of the most popular green transport methods. This is partly because you can avoid traffic jams, and parking difficulties. It is also often the fastest way to get from door-to-door!
There are many cycle routes available for cyclists to use to ensure a safer trip. Using less busy residential roads can lead to a more pleasant and safe journey.
Cycling is...
- Clean - no polluting emissions from day to day cycling.
- Efficient - commonly the quickest method of getting from A to B.
- Space saving - Find a place to park your bike is easier than with a car, and takes up less green space with developed car parks. More of our campus can remain green.
- Healthy - Cycling is a very effective form of exercise.
Where to go
Leicestershire County Council and Charnwood Borough Council (CBC) are implementing a network of cycle paths, crossings of major roads, and other facilities to make cycling in and around Loughborough safer. A cycle route map is available from CBC. Even if no designated cycle routes exist, it is often possible to devise safe routes along side streets.
Purchasing a bike
Obtaining a bike in the Loughborough area, especially around the University is very easy. There are a series of bicycle shops locally including Cogz, the University bicycle shop on campus, located opposite LUFS and the Telford Common Room. View further information on local bicycle retailers.
A standard bike is available for around £100 from most retailers with a helmet and lights likely to cost another £25, and are essential to ensure your safety.
Safety and security
- Locks - Ensure your bike is securely locked. No lock is 100% secure, but the amount you spend on locks be significant. Hardened steel D-locks are commonly accepted as the most successful detterent of thieves. Cycle alarms are available on the market and can act as an effective detterent to thieves.
- Postcoding - If your bike were to be stolen, then having your bike postcoded by the police will enable to move effectively identify and track owners. Contact the local police for more details. Can seem expensive, but worthwhile if the worst happens.
- Insurance - It is worth it if the worst happens.
- Registration - All students and staff using a bicycle on University premises are required to register the cycle with the University Security Office. The registration is designed to identify the owners of bicycles as an aid to crime prevention and the safeguarding of property.
Registered cycles will be issued with a unique numbered label which will be affixed to a conspicuous part of the cycle frame and the details of the owner will be recorded on a secure database. All cycles used on the campus by students or staff must display the registration label.
